Prevention methods based on science-not ideology-are our best hope
in reducing new HIV infections.
AFC
works closely with behavioral scientists, prevention practitioners, and
concerned community members to advocate for science-based HIV prevention
policies and programs. AFC also funds local, community-based prevention
projects through our private grantmaking program and, with our Service
Providers Council (SPC) Prevention Committee, offers prevention agencies
training and support to better equip their staff. AFC Prevention Director
Laird Petersen led AFC's multi-year demonstration project integrating
risk-reduction activities into care settings for HIV-positive individuals.
He was also instrumental in helping local agencies prepare funding applications
in response to new federal guidelines announced in 2004. AFC Board Member
Gary Harper, PhD, of DePaul University, has extensive experience designing
and evaluating HIV prevention programs. He participated in AFC's collaborative
evaluation project linking university-based researchers with local HIV
prevention organizations. He has also trained scores of frontline workers
through the SPC's annual HIV prevention conference.
