2004 Annual Report Leadership |
We advocate for sound HIV/AIDS public policy in partnership with people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS, service organizations, and other allies. Each month, AFC mobilizes thousands of AIDS advocates to address local, state, and federal HIV/AIDS policy issues. We rely on our statewide network of dedicated volunteers to help raise visibility and hold government entities accountable. A seasoned activist and person living with HIV, Jim Pickett joined AFC this year to spearhead our public policy and grassroots mobilizing work. Prior to joining the staff, Pickett volunteered on AFC's microbicide advocacy campaign to promote awareness and research of new technologies to prevent sexual transmission of HIV. Ida Byther-Smith has turned her personal struggle with HIV into a source of strength to inspire and educate others. Active in several community agencies and caucuses, including AFC's Cook County Consortium Advisory Committee, Byther-Smith regularly participates in AFC's lobby activities and trains others to be effective AIDS advocates. |
