About AFC: Code of Ethics Introduction Donors and volunteers support charitable organizations like the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) because they trust the organizations to carry out their missions, to be good stewards of their resources, and to uphold rigorous standards of conduct. Not-for-profit organizations must earn this trust every day and in every possible way. To demonstrate its ongoing commitment to the core values of integrity, honesty, fairness, openness, respect, and responsibility, AFC has formally adopted a Statement of Values and Code of Ethics with which all of our board members, staff, and volunteers. In addition, the existence of the Statement of Values and Code of Ethics has been publicly communicated (i.e., on AFC’s website) and shared with key stakeholders (i.e., potential grant recipients). If you, the reader, have witnessed what you believe to be non-compliance, or feel that you might not be in compliance with AFC’s Statement of Values and Code of Ethics, please e-mail AFC at admin@aidschicago.org and describe your concern. You will be contacted in a timely manner. Alternatively, please contact AFC’s Executive Director and/or the Board President directly to raise potential issues. Statement of Values Founded in 1985 by community activists and physicians, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is a local and national leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We collaborate with community organizations to develop and improve HIV/AIDS services; fund and coordinate prevention, care, and advocacy projects; and champion effective, compassionate HIV/AIDS policy. AFC is built on a foundation of widely shared values. These values include:
These values lead directly to the Code of Ethics that follows. The values inform and guide the way we—AFC’s board members, staff, and volunteers—should perform our responsibilities when acting on behalf of the organization. Code of Ethics I. Personal and Professional Integrity All staff, board members, and volunteers of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) act with honesty, integrity, and openness in our dealings as representatives of the organization. AFC promotes a working environment that values respect, fairness, and integrity, and we put the needs of the organization in front of personal gain and interest. II. Mission The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) has a clearly stated mission and purpose, approved by the board of directors, in pursuit of the public good. Our mission is to lead the fight against HIV/AIDS and improve the lives of people affected by the epidemic. All of our programs support our mission and all who work for, or on behalf of, the organization understand and are loyal to that mission and purpose. The mission is responsive to the constituency and communities served by the organization and of value to society at large. III. Governance The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) has a Board of Directors that is responsible for setting the mission and strategic direction of the organization and overseeing the finances, operations, and policies of the organization. IV. Legal Compliance The AIDS Foundation of Chicago is committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations. V. Responsible Stewardship The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) manages its funds responsibly and prudently. We operate only in ways that are consistent with our mission, strategic vision, and values; our respect for our donors; and our goals of ending HIV/AIDS and improving the lives of those currently living with HIV/AIDS. Our stewardship includes the following considerations:

Openness and Disclosure The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) provides comprehensive and timely information to the public, the media, and all stakeholders and is responsive in a timely manner to reasonable requests for information. All information about AFC will fully and honestly reflect the policies and practices of the organization. Basic informational data about the organization, such as the annual report and audited financial statements, will be posted on our website or otherwise available to the public. All solicitation materials accurately represent AFC’s policies and practices and will respect the dignity of program beneficiaries. All financial, organizational, and program reports will be complete and accurate in all material respects. VII. Ongoing Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement The AIDS Foundation of Chicago continuously monitors program effectiveness and has mechanisms to incorporate lessons learned into future programs. We are responsive to changes in our field of activity and responsive to the needs of our constituencies. VIII. Inclusiveness and Diversity The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) has a policy of promoting inclusiveness; the diversity among our staff, board, and volunteers enriches our programmatic effectiveness. AFC takes meaningful steps to promote inclusiveness in our hiring, retention, promotion, board recruitment, and constituencies served. IX. Fundraising The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is truthful in our solicitation materials. We respect the privacy concerns of individual donors and expend funds consistent with donor intent. AFC discloses important and relevant information to potential donors. In raising funds from public and private sources, AFC will respect the rights of donors, as follows:
