About AFC: Policy Internship

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) is seeking a responsible and motivated individual to work as a Policy Intern.

Reporting to the Policy Associate, the policy intern will directly assist the policy/advocacy team on work that includes lobbying and public policy advocacy, community organizing and education, and consensus building around issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention and care. The internship may include involvement in legislative campaigns, assistance with planning and coordinating monthly provider meetings, research, policy analysis and writing, and general support for the policy staff. The intern may write and edit policy statements, legislative actions alerts, and articles for newsletters. During her/his tenure, the intern will have the opportunity to learn about federal, state, and local AIDS issues as well as strategies used to address them. These issues include HIV prevention and education, discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS, welfare reform, drug policy, and medical care. The intern will also be exposed to the mechanisms through which a private foundation raises and distributes funds to community-based organizations.

AFC anticipates that the policy intern will assist with the following tasks:

  • Strategizing responses to legislative initiatives
  • Research projects including literature reviews and Internet searches
  • Local activity planning on HIV/AIDS issues
  • Reading and analyzing proposed and newly enacted legislation
  • Planning and implementation of monthly advocate meetings
  • Clerical work

Qualifications: Qualified candidates will be able to devote a minimum of 8 weeks, and a minimum of 15 hours per week, subject to staff needs and intern availability. The intern will be required to travel to the Loop for daily activities. Some travel around Chicago may be needed, but will not require a car. There may be opportunities for some travel throughout Illinois. The intern must have computer skills including Internet and word processing on Microsoft Word. Willingness to work as part of a team is a must. Public policy, political science, social work, and government majors are encouraged to apply.

Stipend: A stipend may be available to interns who meet specific requirements. Please inquire.
