AFC Marks 20 Years of
Service with Community Events

In 2005, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC) marks 20 years in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We will commemorate this anniversary through this year’s events and activities, which further our mission. In addition, we have organized a series of community events on current issues in HIV/AIDS to prepare for the work that lies ahead. We hope you will join us.

A Local and Global Response: Helping Children Affected by AIDS
Chicago Cultural Center, Claudia Cassidy Theater
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Mark Kline, director of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, will discuss the scope of the global HIV/AIDS crisis among children and families, and describe how Chicagoans can help. Following his remarks, Dr. Kline will be joined by a panel of local, HIV/AIDS medical experts for a question-and-answer session.

The 15th annual black-tie gala will feature dinner, dancing, silent auction, raffle, and a spectacular performance by The Pointer Sisters. Ticket/table prices range from $350 to $25,000.

See the men of Chicago's top dance companies don lipstick, powder, and paint as they pay tribute to the famous dancing ladies of stage, screen, and music in a special performance. Tickets range from $25 to $100.

The Time Is Now: Confronting HIV/AIDS in the African-American Community
Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago
6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

On June 21 local and national leaders discussed strategies to address the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on African Americans. The session was part of a series of events commemorating the AIDS Foundation of Chicago’s 20th year of service to the community, and was also a public education program of Chicago Foundation for Women’s African American Leadership Council. Presented by Chicago Dancers United, Dance for Life is the largest performance-based HIV/AIDS fundraiser in the Midwest. The event features Chicago's top dance companies and includes a pre-show reception and raffle. Ticket prices range from $75 to $500.

Produced by Chicago Special Events Management, this 5K Run & Walk on Chicago's lakefront brings together thousands of runners and walkers to show support for the fight against HIV/AIDS. Through the CommunityDirect program, local HIV/AIDS service providers receive 50% of all money they raise through pledges and registration fees. $20 early registration, $25 event-day registration. Pledges highly encouraged.

Take the reality check: Are prevention programs effective? Are they adequately funded? Join David Holtgrave, Ph.D., chair of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Julie Davids, executive director of CHAMP, for a discussion on science-based HIV-prevention programs. Satisfy your sweet tooth with the help of Chicago's finest restaurants, caterers, and chocolatiers at World of Chocolate, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's annual World AIDS Day event. A panel of local celebrity judges will award top honors for the best chocolate creations. The event also features an international holiday bazaar and a raffle. Tickets start at $60.
