Daylong Prevention Conference Marks 2007 National HIV Testing Day

Internationally renowned AIDS activist Louise Binder MORE PHOTOS

The Center on Halsted and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago organized a daylong conference called “Preventing HIV: Ethics, Activism, and Promising New Strategies” on June 27, National HIV Testing Day. The event featured lectures from three public health experts and highlighted the need for a broad, multilateral response to the needs of people living with and at risk of HIV/AIDS.

Legendary AIDS activist Louise Binder, the first HIV-positive woman to headline an International AIDS Society Conference, discussed how the public health system has failed women. amFAR's Dr. Monica Ruiz presented information on new HIV prevention technologies, and fellow health expert, Susan Kingston, discussed the use of crystal meth in the gay community.

The free conference was generously sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Center on Halsted and the Illinois Department of Public Health. Special thanks to the NAMES Project for displaying sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
