International AIDS Expert Addresses Challenges to AIDS Community

Dr. Geeta Rao Gupta, president of the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), discussed the role of gender inequity in fueling the AIDS pandemic during her keynote address at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago's (AFC) Annual Meeting on Tuesday, November 11, 2003. The ICRW is a Washington, D.C.-based organization that undertakes policy-oriented research, technical assistance, and advocacy focused on women's economic roles, reproductive health and nutrition, HIV/AIDS, adolescent sexual health, and women's rights.

Dr. Rao Gupta holds a Ph.D. in social psychology, has over twenty years of experience in research and program development, particularly in the area of women's health, and is an international expert on HIV/AIDS issues. She also serves on many distinguished boards, including the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, the Ms. Foundation, InterAction, and the Moriah Fund.

In addition to Dr. Rao Gupta's presentation, AFC held elections for its Board of Directors and the Service Providers Council (SPC). The SPC is a membership coalition of 139 local organizations that provide HIV/AIDS services and education/prevention programs in the Chicago metropolitan area. The only coalition of its kind in the country, the SPC informs AFC's grantmaking and advocacy priorities, and works collectively to identify service gaps and expand and improve HIV care and education programs.

Annual elections for the AFC Board of Directors and the Service Providers Council were conducted by Board Member Isiaah Crawford, PhD and SPC Membership Committee Chair Betty Smith. The 2003-2004 SPC Executive Committee is comprised of the following members:
