SPECIAL INITIATIVES

AIDS Run & Walk Chicago CommunityDirect Grants - AFC provides grants through CommunityDirect, a fundraising program that benefits AFC's Service Providers Council (SPC). SPC agencies that formed teams for the 2005 AIDS Run & Walk Chicago received 50% of the dollars they raised to directly benefit their programs and communities.

AmeriCorps Matching Grant - AFC places seven AmeriCorps members at agencies throughout Chicago to provide HIV prevention, care, and testing services. AFC is required to pay a matching grant of $3,500 per member to the National AIDS Fund for administrative costs related to this grant. Funded partners are Center on Halsted, Chicago House, Haymarket Center, AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago Recovery Alliance, and Infant Welfare Society. This initiative is funded in part by the Elizabeth Morse Genius Charitable Trust.

Capacity Building Grant - AFC awarded a capacity grant to TaskForce Prevention and Community Services, which provides prevention education, care, and advocacy services for African-American MSM. The grant will help strengthen the agency’s visibility, board development, and resource diversification.

Chicago Housing for Health Partnership - AFC continues to be the lead agency in coordinating housing for chronically-ill homeless individuals and to evaluate the cost-benefits of a comprehensive array of housing and social services. Components of this initiative were funded through private resources including the Michael Reese Health Trust, The Chicago Community Trust, The Siragusa Foundation, The Field Foundation of Illinois, The Prince Charitable Trusts, The Baxter International Foundation, and Grant Healthcare Foundation.

Dance for Life - AFC earmarks a portion of the proceeds raised through Dance for Life to support beneficiary agencies and an emergency fund for clients living with HIV. The funded agencies are Test Positive Aware Network, BEHIV, and South Side Help Center.

Faith in Prevention Initiative - AFC supports faith-based organizations in their efforts to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS on the health of African-American men and women in Chicago. Eleven funded churches and faith-based organizations each received a leadership grant of $5,000 to support a variety of HIV prevention and outreach activities. This initiative is funded by the Michael Reese Health Trust and Elizabeth Morse Genius Charitable Trust.

Food and Nutrition Advocacy Partnership - AFC is leading a coalition, funded by the Altria Group, Inc., to improve access to food and nutritional counseling. The partnership also studies the impact that improved access to food programs and services has on chronically-ill individuals, including seniors and those living with HIV. Funded partners include Catholic Charities Lake County Services, Greater Chicago Food Depository, Health & Disability Advocates, Illinois Hunger Coalition, People's Resource Center, and Vital Bridges.

Global AIDS Initiative Award - AFC raised private funding to support Chicago-based community organizations that provide HIV/AIDS prevention, advocacy, care, and treatment internationally. The three Chicago organizations funded are the Children's Place, Martin Temple AME Zion Church, and Women's Equity for Access to Care and Treatment for HIV (WE-ACTx), all of which have projects in Africa working with HIV-positive women, children, and orphans.

Homeless Funds - AFC awarded grants to housing agencies through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to provide emergency housing assistance to individuals living with HIV citywide. The awarded agencies are Chicago House, Christian Community Health Center, Interfaith House, South Side Help Center, Vital Bridges, BEHIV, Agape Missions, Inc., and Heartland Alliance.

Katrina Relief Fund - AFC awarded a grant to the National AIDS Fund to support agencies in New Orleans that provided HIV/AIDS prevention/education, advocacy, and care to individuals living in areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Perinatal HIV Case Management Project - AFC coordinates this project, which is funded by the Pediatric AIDS Chicago Prevention Initiative to help eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV by increasing pregnant HIV-positive women's participation in prenatal care.

South Side Women's Collaborative - AFC coordinates a collaborative project between Chicago Women's AIDS Project, Christian Community Health Center, and the South Side Help Center to increase access to HIV prevention and primary care services for African-American women on the south side of Chicago. The collaborative's research and evaluation component is provided by Chicago State University's HIV/AIDS Policy and Research Institute. The collaborative is funded in part by the National AIDS Fund and Johnson & Johnson.

Supportive Housing Initiatives - AFC was awarded funds through the Illinois Department of Public Health; Sara Lee Foundation; Chicago Tribune Charities-Holiday, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation; and the Polk Bros. Foundation to support housing initiatives for individuals living with HIV. The funded partner agencies are BEHIV, Chicago House, Christian Community Health Center, Interfaith House, and South Side Help Center.
